Snow and Damage to Pool Delays Opening

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Due to the record-breaking winter this year, there are significant challenges for timely opening of the pool.  We will do our best to keep you posted once we have a better idea of when our pool will be available.  For more information, see below.

The melting snowpack and its drainage causes a delay each year, usually resolving by Memorial Day. But no timely resolution this year. The pool is basically a concrete boat buried in the ground. Its proximity to the creek and wetlands means that the water table is already high, and with the extensive snowmelt runoff and wetlands flooding, even higher. The pool cannot be drained for cleaning and needed repairs until the snowmelt has drained and groundwater recedes, or the pool will float on the groundwater and pop up from the ground, destroying it. Opening the pool is a complicated process, and also a careful process to get another year out of aging equipment.

Unfortunately, there is presently no timetable for opening the pool. Don reported this morning, “It’ll be at least a month,” and  further explained that additional snow removal must be completed before Dave Davis can access the pumps and other equipment. After the inspection, Dave Davis will provide Don with an estimated timeframe for opening the pool.

Some equipment is already known to need repair. The roof of the pump house is damaged, including the roof vent. After the additional snow removal is completed, Don will contact the roofer and obtain an estimate for those repairs. The tiling around the pool is also damaged and must also be repaired before the pool can be opened.

There is also water infiltration into the lines which bring water between the pump house and the pool. Until Dave Davis is able to assess the damage to those lines, and determine the repairs required, this remains a significant unknown. These repairs could cause an extensive delay opening the pool depending upon what precise steps are necessary to effect proper repairs.
